Bradford White Upright electric (RE2)

Bradford White's Canadian upright electric tanks (RE2 family, sheet C1201) span 27 to 76 US gallon nominal capacities in tall and short forms with two elements, published standby-loss ratings in watts rather than UEF, and no venting requirement. They are the standard electric-tank replacement across Metro Vancouver.

About the Upright electric (RE2)

The RE2 upright family is Bradford White's Canadian residential electric line: glass-lined two-element tanks from the 27-gallon RE230S6 to the 76-gallon RE280T6, in short (S) and tall (T) forms. The Canadian sheet publishes standby loss in watts, first-hour delivery and recovery rather than a UEF figure, which reflects how Canadian electric tanks are regulated; the watts figure is the efficiency measure to compare between models, and it is not interchangeable with the UEF used on gas tanks.

Electric tanks need no venting, no gas line and no combustion air, but they need a dedicated circuit sized to the installed elements, and their recovery is much slower than gas: the sheet's recovery column is about 21 US gal/h (79 L/h) at a 90 °F rise across the family, which is why electric sizing leans on stored volume and why the first-hour rating, not the nominal gallons, is the figure to match.

BC's plumbing code sets electric storage-tank thermostats at 60 °C with fixtures limited to 49 °C by a mixing valve, and Metro Vancouver's soft water makes anode condition the maintenance priority. Whether CANRO stocks a given model for a job is confirmed at consultation.

Highlights

  • 27–76 US gal nominal; tall and short forms; two elements
  • No venting, gas line or combustion air required
  • Rated by standby loss in watts on the Canadian sheet (not UEF)
  • Recovery about 21 US gal/h (79 L/h) at a 90 °F rise across the family
  • Vitraglas lining with Microban; magnesium anode
  • 6 or 10-year tank warranty, 6-year parts warranty, no labour

The Canadian upright electric sheet lists 6 or 10-year limited tank warranties with a 6-year limited warranty on component parts (10-year models change the suffix 6 to 10). Labour is not covered; removal and reinstallation charges are excluded.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the sheet show standby loss instead of UEF?

Canadian efficiency regulation for electric storage tanks is expressed as standby loss in watts, and Bradford White's Canadian sheet publishes that figure. It cannot be compared with the UEF figures used on gas-fired tanks.

What electrical supply does an electric tank need?

A dedicated circuit sized to the installed elements. The sheet's element table lists the wattages available at each supply voltage, from 120 V up to 480 V; in BC homes a 240 V circuit is the norm, confirmed at assessment.

How is an electric tank sized?

By first-hour rating against the busiest hour, like a gas tank, but with slower recovery the stored volume carries more of the load, which is why 50 and 60-gallon electric tanks are common where a 40-gallon gas tank would do.
