What actually separates them

Capacity is where the comparison must be disciplined. Navien publishes the NPE-240A2's flow at 35, 45 and 67 °F rises, and Rinnai publishes the RU199iN's rated range and an 11 GPM maximum with no stated rise, with flow curves valid only below 21 °C inlet. In a Metro Vancouver January the rise to 49 °C approaches 40 °C (72 °F), so the Navien 67 °F figure (5.6 GPM) and the Rinnai flow-at-rise table are the comparable numbers, and both land in the 5 to 6 GPM zone.

Efficiency: the RU199iN rates UEF 0.95 and the NPE-240A2 UEF 0.95, both high-draw-class tankless ratings; neither number is a savings percentage and the two are not compared with other draw patterns.

Physically, the NPE-240A2 is a larger and heavier cabinet (27.4 in high, 77 lb) than the RU199iN (26.4 in, 64 lb), with the Navien's 3/4 in connections, 2 in or 3 in venting, and forced-draft direct-vent configuration; the RU vents in 2 in PVC-family pipe within its equivalent-length tables.

Both brands are named by CANRO on its own pages. Warranty terms, registration and the local support story are confirmed at consultation, and either unit is sized by flow at the winter rise, never by the brochure maximum.

The Rinnai RU199iN is an indoor condensing natural gas tankless water heater with a 15,000–199,000 BTU/h input, UEF 0.95, 2" PVC venting and up to 11 GPM (42 L/min) of flow at an unstated temperature rise. It is listed on rinnai.ca and is the largest residential RU model, with a propane version, the RU199iP.

Which is better: Rinnai or Navien?
