Drain valve

Manufacturers call for draining about a gallon from the tank monthly to remove sediment, and for full flushing and annual inspection as part of the service schedule. The drain valve is the access point for both, which is why its condition matters: a valve that will not open fully makes flushing impossible, and one that will not close leaves the tank leaking.

A drain valve that drips is usually repaired by replacing the valve or its seat; the tank does not need to be drained to diagnose it, but the repair does isolate the tank. The relief-valve and drain-valve checks are part of the annual maintenance visit so small leaks are found before they become floor damage.
