Bradford White Direct vent (RG2DV)

Bradford White's direct vent (RG2DV) tanks are closed-combustion gas storage water heaters sold in Canada in 40, 48 and 50 US gallon forms with 38,000 to 50,000 BTU/h inputs, drawing combustion air through a co-axial side-wall vent so no chimney or room air is needed.

About the Direct vent (RG2DV)

A direct vent tank solves the no-chimney problem differently from a power vent: instead of a blower, the RG2DV family uses a co-axial vent pipe, pipe inside pipe, that draws combustion air in through the outer passage and exhausts through the inner one by natural draft. That makes the whole system closed to the room and lets the ICON System control run on the pilot's thermopile, so the heater needs no electricity at all and keeps working during outages.

The Canadian line has three models: the RG2DV40S6N (40 US gal), the RG2DV50S6N (50 US gal) and the RG2DV50H6N, a 48 US gallon high-input model with a 50,000 BTU/h burner, 96 US gallon first-hour rating and 3/4 in side connections for space heating. Vent kits telescope or flex to reach a side-wall termination: the sheet's solid kits cover up to 8 ft of vertical and horizontal run, and the flexible kit reaches 100 in (2540 mm).

Because combustion is sealed, the sheet does not list the Defender flammable-vapour-ignition-resistant bullet for this family the way the atmospheric sheets do; the vapour-sensor function is replaced by the closed combustion path. UEF runs 0.60 to 0.64 and recovery efficiency is stated at 78%. Whether CANRO stocks a given model for a job is confirmed at consultation.

Highlights

  • Closed combustion: combustion air and exhaust both travel the co-axial vent to a side-wall termination
  • No electricity required: millivolt ICON control powered by the pilot thermopile
  • Solid telescoping and flexible vent kits sized for the model (up to 8 ft runs; 100 in flexible)
  • 40, 48 and 50 US gal; 38,000–50,000 BTU/h; UEF 0.60–0.64
  • RG2DV50H6N adds a 50,000 BTU/h input, 96 US gal first-hour rating and space-heating connections
  • 6 or 10-year tank and parts limited warranty; no labour coverage

The Canadian direct-vent sheet lists 6 or 10-year limited tank warranties and a 6 or 10-year limited warranty on component parts (the 10-year models change the suffix 6 to 10). Labour is not covered; removal and reinstallation charges are excluded.

Frequently asked questions

Do direct vent tanks need a chimney or electricity?

Neither. The co-axial vent terminates through a side wall, drawing combustion air from outside, and the millivolt control runs on the pilot's thermopile, so the heater works during a power outage.

How is direct vent different from power vent?

A power vent uses a blower pushing exhaust through PVC pipe and needs 120 VAC. A direct vent relies on natural draft through a co-axial pipe and needs no power, but the vent run is short and must use the manufacturer's kit.

Are these tanks flammable-vapour resistant?

The Canadian spec sheet does not list the Defender FVIR bullet for the direct vent family. Because the burner is sealed from the room, the vapour-resistance design is not the protection mechanism on these models.
