Rinnai RX180iN in practice

The RX180iN sits one step below the RX199iN in Rinnai Canada's current flagship series, sharing the RX platform's UEF 0.98 and Wi-Fi control with a 180,000 BTU/h cap and a 10.0 GPM (38 L/min) maximum flow, both quoted without a temperature rise. The flow tables in manual 100000839 govern the winter figure at Metro Vancouver's roughly 40 °C rise.

Installation follows the RX platform pattern: PVC, CPVC or polypropylene venting, a 3/4 in gas connection sized for the input, a condensate drain and 120 V power. The platform is certified SCAQMD ultra-low-NOx and marked ENERGY STAR on the Canadian listing. Whether CANRO stocks this model for a given job is confirmed at consultation.

Best suited to

  • Two-bathroom homes wanting the RX platform at a lower input than the RX199iN
  • Buyers who want UEF 0.98 and Wi-Fi without the full 199,000 BTU/h gas draw
  • Homes where the gas supply limits the input the tankless unit can use

Limitations to know

  • Maximum flow is quoted without a temperature rise; winter delivery at a 40 °C rise is far lower
  • Requires 120 V power; no hot water during an outage
  • Annual descaling is a warranty condition; lime damage is excluded

Recirculation-capable with Rinnai's controls and an external pump (dedicated return line or crossover valve). Recirculation makes hot water quicker at the tap, not instant, and adds gas use.

Manuals

Maintenance the manufacturer specifies

  • Flush (descale) the heat exchanger at least once a year using the included isolation valves; Rinnai states lime damage is not covered by warranty and hard water needs more frequent flushing.
  • Set the Service Soon reminder (parameter 03: 0.5, 1 or 2 years) so the display prompts the next flush.
  • Clean the cold-water inlet filter screen periodically.
  • Register within 90 days of installation to keep the 5-year labour warranty; otherwise labour defaults to 1 year.

Services

Hot water and scalding

  1. Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
  2. Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
  3. Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.

Official guidance: Government of Canada on water temperature and scalds and HealthLinkBC.
