Navien NPE-240S2

The Navien NPE-240S2 is the largest of Navien's current S2 condensing tankless models: 13,300–199,900 BTU/h on natural gas or propane, UEF 0.96, and published flows of 11.2 GPM at a 35 °F rise and 5.8 GPM at a 67 °F rise.

Navien NPE-240S2 in practice

The NPE-240S2 is Navien's current-generation flagship in Canada, the S-series successor to the NPE-A2 line: UEF 0.96 against the A2's 0.95 on Navien's pages, and flow published at three temperature rises, with the 67 °F figure improved to 5.8 GPM (22.0 L/min) over the A2's 5.6. As with every tankless unit, the Metro Vancouver winter figure at a rise approaching 40 °C is the sizing number, not the 35 °F maximum.

It shares the S2 platform's forced-draft direct venting in 2 in or 3 in approved pipe, 3/4 in connections, 120 V operation and wall-hung indoor or outdoor installation. Whether CANRO stocks this model for a given job is confirmed at consultation.

Best suited to

  • Larger homes converting to tankless with the current Navien platform
  • Two-bathroom households with occasional simultaneous use
  • Buyers who want Navien's highest published UEF at the flagship input

Limitations to know

  • Winter delivery at a 67 °F-class rise is 5.8 GPM: two simultaneous showers are still marginal
  • Requires 120 V power; no hot water during an outage
  • Needs a sealed 2 in or 3 in vent route and a condensate drain
  • Navien's published resale policy voids warranty for internet or e-commerce purchases; supply runs through contractors

The S2 platform supports Navien's recirculation configuration with an external pump or crossover accessory, as on the A2; energy consumption rises when recirculation is configured. Recirculation shortens, not eliminates, the wait at the tap.

Manuals

Maintenance the manufacturer specifies

  • Flush (descale) the heat exchanger periodically per Navien's maintenance guidance; scale damage is not covered by warranty.
  • Clean the water inlet filter as part of the service interval.
  • Check the condensate drain and trap for flow and blockage at service.
  • Confirm the correct vent material and lengths from the installation manual before any vent work.

Services

Hot water and scalding

  1. Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
  2. Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
  3. Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.

Official guidance: Government of Canada on water temperature and scalds and HealthLinkBC.

Frequently asked questions

Is the NPE-240S2 sold in Canada?

Yes. Navien's Canadian site lists the NPE-S2 series with the NPE-240S2 among its residential water heaters.

How does the S2 differ from the A2 at this size?

The S2 rates UEF 0.96 against 0.95 and delivers 5.8 GPM at a 67 °F rise against 5.6 GPM on the A2, at the same input class and cabinet size.

How much hot water can it deliver in winter?

At a 67 °F (37 °C) rise Navien rates it at 5.8 GPM (22.0 L/min), the winter-class figure for Metro Vancouver; simultaneous showers are assessed against that, not against the 35 °F rating.
