What actually separates them

The S6N exists for one reason: basements and closets where 56 5/8 in of height does not fit. It stands 48 1/16 in to the top of the heater and needs a wider 22 in jacket to carry the same 40 gallons, so the trade is vertical space for floor width.

The efficiency difference is real and often missed: UEF 0.58 on the short tank against 0.64 on the tall one under the same medium-draw test, and six fewer US gallons in the first hour (69 against 75), at the same 40,000 BTU/h input. The shorter tank's greater surface area per unit of stored volume raises standby loss, which is exactly what the UEF figure captures.

Both vent through a 3 in or 4 in draft hood into a chimney or B-vent, draw combustion air from the room and need no electricity. Both carry the optional top temperature-and-pressure valve location; the short 30-gallon and lowboy models are the ones that do not.

How much height does the short form really save?

About 8 1/2 in at the top of the heater, or about 9 1/2 in if you compare exhaust connections. The vent still needs its own clearance above that.
