Bradford White RG240T6N in practice

The RG240T6N is the 40-gallon tall member of Bradford White's Defender Safety System atmospheric line. Its first-hour rating of 75 US gallons (284 L) is the figure that matters for sizing: a 40-gallon nominal tank with a 40,000 BTU/h burner can deliver nearly twice its volume in a busy hour because it reheats at about 43 US gal/h at a 50 °C rise. The Canadian spec sheet gives the nominal volume; the tested storage volume of 38 US gallons appears only on the US edition.

Because it vents by natural draft through a 3" or 4" draft hood, it needs a chimney or B-vent in good condition and combustion air from the room. That makes it the natural replacement where an existing atmospheric tank sits under a working flue, and a poor fit where the flue is gone or a sealed mechanical room is planned. It needs no electricity, so hot water continues during a power outage.

UEF 0.64 is a medium-draw rating under the current test procedure. It is not comparable to a tankless unit's UEF, which is tested at a different draw pattern, nor to a legacy EF. The model is not ENERGY STAR certified, since version 5.0 requires UEF 0.81 or better for gas storage tanks of this size. Whether CANRO stocks this model for a given job is confirmed at consultation.

Best suited to

  • Like-for-like replacement of an existing 40 US gal atmospheric gas tank under a working chimney or B-vent
  • Households of two to four people with moderate simultaneous demand
  • Homes that want hot water to continue during power outages

Limitations to know

  • Needs a suitable chimney or B-vent and room combustion air; cannot be side-wall vented
  • UEF 0.64 is below ENERGY STAR; a power-vent, condensing tank or tankless unit is more efficient
  • First-hour rating of 284 L may run short for five-plus people or a large soaker tub
  • Warranty excludes labour and anode consumption; anode inspection every 2 years is required

Manuals

Maintenance the manufacturer specifies

  • Inspect the anode rod every 2 years and replace when depleted; more often with softened water (manual, Maintenance item 9).
  • Operate the T&P relief valve at least once a year to check it lifts and reseats without leaking (item 6).
  • Drain about a gallon monthly to remove sediment (item 7); annual inspection by a qualified technician.
  • Inspect the vent system at least once a year; check burner flames twice a year (items 10 and 4).

Services

Hot water and scalding

  1. Water above 49 °C at a tap can scald in seconds, and children and older adults are at most risk. BC's plumbing code limits shower and bathtub water to 49 °C.
  2. Storage tanks are normally kept hotter (Health Canada advises 60 °C) to limit Legionella growth, with a thermostatic mixing valve tempering the water to the fixtures.
  3. Never bypass or remove a mixing valve, thermostat or high-limit control to get hotter water.

Official guidance: Government of Canada on water temperature and scalds and HealthLinkBC.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RG240T6N sold in Canada?

Yes. It is listed by model number on Bradford White's Canadian residential gas page and has its own Canadian spec sheet, C1101. Bradford White sells only through wholesalers, so it is supplied and installed by contractors such as CANRO.

What does 75 gallon first-hour rating mean?

It is how much hot water the heater can deliver in one busy hour starting from a full, hot tank: the stored 40 gallons plus what the 40,000 BTU/h burner reheats during that hour. It is the figure to match to your peak-hour demand, not the nominal 40 gallons.

Can the RG240T6N run on propane?

The propane version is the RG240T6X. It has a 36,000 BTU/h input and a lower recovery of 34 US gal/h at a 90 °F rise. Fuel conversion is not a field procedure on this model; order the correct fuel version.

Does this heater show error codes?

Only if it is fitted with an electronic gas control (Bradford White's ICON System or the White Rodgers electronic control), which shows LED flash codes. Units with the White Rodgers mechanical control and piezo igniter have no codes. Check the valve on your unit; the code page for this series explains the patterns.
