Insufficient water heating (ICON System V1)

LED: 3 flashes, 3-second pause

Needs attentionBradford White Defender and atmospheric-vent residential gas tanks fitted with the ICON System V1 electronic gas control (single-colour green LED)

On the ICON System V1 control, three flashes with a three-second pause mean "Insufficient water heating. System will reset". The manual's probable causes are a thermal sensor out of calibration or a faulty gas control, and its service procedure is to replace the gas control.

Applies to

Applies only to tanks fitted with the ICON System V1 gas control. The V2 control and the White Rodgers electronic control do not document a three-flash pattern, so a three-flash reading identifies the control as V1.

Control platform: Bradford White ICON System V1 electronic gas control (green LED status light). Source manual: 238-51542-00E (REV 08/22).

Why a code is not a diagnosis

The code is a temperature-control complaint, not a pilot or ignition fault: the control believes the water is not being heated to the setpoint. A sensor out of calibration and a faulty control are the manual's two causes; both end in gas-control replacement per the service procedure, but a technician verifies the sensor first.

Safe things to observe

  • Confirm the control is a V1 (single-colour LED) before reading the pattern as three flashes.
  • Note whether the burner runs at all and how warm the water actually is at the taps.

Do not

  • Do not assume the tank is heating normally because the pilot is lit.
  • Do not replace parts without the manual's sensor checks.

How professional service helps

  1. A technician verifies the temperature sensor reading and the control per the service manual, then replaces the gas control as directed.

Frequently asked questions

Is three flashes on any Bradford White control the same?

No. Three flashes are documented only on the ICON System V1 control. If the control is a V2 or a White Rodgers electronic unit, read its own chart; the pattern is not defined there.
